Randy Moss Would Make Poor Fit On Kansas City…

Randy Moss likely still has enough talent to make an impact on an NFL roster. Terrell Owens would likely say the same. Even though Scott Pioli has a history with taking a chance on Randy Moss during his tenure with the New England Patriots, the newly unretired Moss is likely not going to come back to Pioli’s roster any time soon.

Star-divide

Moss has made himself available this off-season as yet another target to be considered among a growing number that could also include the Chiefs’ Dwayne Bowe and the Saints’ Marques Colston. Even if the Chiefs lose Bowe, they have already signed Steve Breaston last season to a long-term contract and drafted Jon Baldwin in the same year. While the team would definitely miss Bowe and would add someone to the mix, it’s hard to imagine that Moss could enter the picture.

ESPN’s Bill Williamson agrees and says influence also plays a part. He writes, “Moss has a connection with Kansas City general manager Scott Pioli and quarterback Matt Cassel. Still, Pioli has passed on reuniting with Moss in the past. Maybe if Dwayne Bowe leaves Pioli would change his mind. Moss had a reputation for being a poor influence on young receivers. It probably wouldn’t be a good idea putting him with Jonathan Baldwin.”

Perhaps a good guess could be back to New England if the team shuffles its roster enough. Maybe even a San Francisco sighting would not be surprising. After all, they took a flyer on Braylon Edwards and the team can clearly use some receiving help after being shut down in the playoffs.

Giants assistant Jack Bicknell Jr. to be hired as…

Giants assistant coach Jack Bicknell Jr. is expected to be hired as the Kansas City Chiefs’ offensive line coach, according to someone informed of the impending hire.

The person requested anonymity because Kansas City hasn’t yet announced the addition of Bicknell to Romeo Crennel’s staff. Bicknell, a native of North Plainfield, interviewed with the Chiefs last week.

Bicknell, 49, has been the Giants’ assistant offensive line coach under Pat Flaherty for the past three seasons. Previously, he was an assistant and head coach for three college programs. He served as a graduate assistant at Boston College in 1986 for his father Jack Sr., the Philadelphia Eagles’ head coach from 1981-90, and returned to the program as offensive line coach from 2007-08. Jack Jr., whose brother Bob is the Buffalo Bills’ tight ends coach, was the head coach at Louisiana Tech from 1999-2006.

Bicknell’s departure means the Giants now have two vacancies on their offensive staff. Quarterbacks coach Mike Sullivan was hired as the Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator on Friday.

NFL.com reported earlier today that Alex Van Pelt accepted a position on the Green Bay Packers’ offensive staff. Van Pelt had generated interest from the Giants to replace Sullivan.

NFL Draft 2012: Alabama's Dre Kirkpatrick Will…

Read More: Brandon Carr (CB – KAN), Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs have a major choice ahead of them with restricted free agent Brandon Carr. If they can sign him to a long-term deal, then the team can move on to other candidates for their first round choice, which will come at either No. 11 or 12 without a trade (and depending on the upcoming coin flip during the NFL Combine). If, however, they lose their starting corner to another team — like his hometown Detroit Lions — then the team has some work to do.

Part of that work to solve the corner dilemma could come at the expense of that first round choice in the 2012 NFL Draft. Dre Kirkpatrick is among the top corners available in the draft and while others like Morris Claiborne could go as high as No. 3 to the Minnesota Vikings, Kirkpatrick will likely slide to some degree because of character concerns (which includes a recent arrest on possession of marijuana, although charges were later dropped). Still, his talent should overwhelm any character issues.

Wes Bunting writes, “Overall, Kirkpatrick has all the physical tools to be an excellent corner in the NFL. Corners with his height and wingspan are rare and he should get drafted very high assuming he runs well at the combine. The main concern is that shortly after the season ended, he was arrested for marijuana possession … Still it’s a red flag and cause for concern and his off-field activities need to be checked out.”

The Chiefs might have greater needs to address with that choice (especially offensive tackle), but a high value corner like Kirkpatrick might shift things if they like what they see at the Combine and ensuing Pro Days. At the very least, the Chiefs have options to keep cornerback a position of strength.

Leave any suggestions in the comment box.

Feb 10, 2012 – Kansas City Chiefs head coach Rome Crennel is looking to find a replacement for their recently retired offensive line coach Bill Muir, and they are looking East at the Super Bowl champion New York Giants. According to the Star Ledger’s Mike Garafolo, the Chiefs have interviewed Jack Bicknell Jr. who held the assistant offensive line coach with the Giants since 2009 and is behind Pat Flaherty. So far Bicknell is the only candidate to be publicly known to have interviewed for the job.

Most of Bicknell’s coaching experience has come from the college ranks where he coached the offensive and defensive lines at New Hampshire, was with Louisiana Tech as their offensive line coach before being their head coach for seven seasons and then returned to his alma mater Boston College to coach the offensive line for two years before going to the Giants.

Coaching runs in the Bicknell family as his father Jack Bicknell was a college head coach for 15 years and coached in NFL Europe for another 14 years, and his brother Bob Bicknell was a former coach with the Chiefs and is currently on the Buffalo Bills staff where he is the wide receivers coach.

Report: Steelers to hire Haley as offensive…

PITTSBURGH — The Steelers will hire former Kansas City Chiefs coach Todd Haley to be their offensive coordinator, according to an ESPN report.

The move, first reported by 610 AM in Kansas City, has not yet been announced.

Haley will replace Bruce Arians, now with the Indianapolis Colts.

The 45-year-old Haley, fired by Kansas City on Dec. 13, went 19-26 in two-plus seasons with the Chiefs, leading them to the 2010 AFC West title.

He spent 10 seasons as an assistant before being hired by Kansas City. He was offensive coordinator for Arizona in 2007-08, helping lead the Cardinals to their only Super Bowl appearance.

Phone messages left for Haley by the Associated Press were not immediately returned.

The Steelers went 12-4 this season but lost the AFC North title to Baltimore on a tiebreaker.

The Chiefs were 5-8 when Haley was dismissed. His last game was a tough one. Kansas City lost, 37-10, to the New York Jets at the Meadowlands, and it was their fifth loss in six games. Kansas City committed 11 penalties for 128 yards in the performance, including a 15-yarder on Haley for unsportsmanlike conduct that may have sealed his fate.

The next day, he was fired.

“Timing in these situations is always difficult. There never seems to be a right time,” Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said at the time. “We just felt the inconsistent play the team has experienced throughout the season, including yesterday’s game, made today the right day to do it.”

After three lopsided losses to start the season, Kansas City rattled off four straight wins and briefly pulled into a tie atop the AFC West. But that was followed by a home loss to previously winless Miami, the start of a disastrous six weeks in which the losses mounted.

“We’ve had one of those years where we’ve had injuries, and injuries to key players, but that’s typical in the National Football League,” Hunt said then. “As a team, you have to find a way to overcome that, and we just weren’t able to do that this year. Our play was up and down the entire season and at times it was up and down during a given game, and I think those contributed to our decision.”

Without a bye, the Steelers had to play a road game at Denver to open the postseason. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger threw for 289 yards and a touchdown, but the Steelers fell to the Broncos, 29-23, in overtime.

Haley is the son of Dick Haley, formerly the director of player personnel for the Steelers from 1971-1990.

There is the quick update of the day.
