NFL Free Agent Rumors – Mike Tolbert to Kansas…

Kansas City endured a season with numerous injuries and the firing of their head coach, but the Chiefs have plenty of talent and could compete for a spot in the NFL playoffs with just a couple of key moves this off-season.

The latest rumor from Bleacher Report has the team adding some much-needed depth at running back as one of the teams that could sign former San Diego Chargers back Mike Tolbert.

Tolbert entered the league as an undrafted free agent and went from a special teams player to a back that scored 19 touchdowns over the past two seasons. Kansas City was hit with injuries to their backfield last year and adding a big back would give the team some added insurance for the 2012-13 season.

At 5’9″ and 243 pounds, Tolbert has the size the Chiefs need and would give the team an added weapon down at the goal line. The 26-year-old has averaged over 4 yards per carry in his four-year career, but he also is a good pass catcher with 79 receptions for nearly 650 yards over the past two years.

The upcoming NFL free agency signing period is closing in and Kansas City could use some help at running back, and signing a proven veteran is most likely the best option for the Chiefs and that way they can use the draft to fill other needs on the team’s roster.

Ryan Succop’s Field Goals Approach Record for…

Ryan Succop is on the cusp of having a record-breaking year kicking field goals for the Kansas City Chiefs. The Kansas City Star reports Succop has made 21 consecutive field goals which is second all-time for the Chiefs. He is tied with Nick Lowery who made 21 straight kicks in both 1990 and 1991.

The record is 22 field goals in a row, set by Pete Stoyanovich from 1997-1998 over two seasons. Just two more kicks and the record belongs to Succop.

The season didn’t start out well at all for the placekicker. The NFL lockout might have affected Succop’s performance in the beginning of the season. He started out making only one of his first four attempts over the first three games. One 38-yard miss in the first quarter against the San Diego Chargers on Sept. 25 could have given the Chiefs at least a tie by the end of regulation.

Since the 4:52 mark of the first quarter against the Chargers, Succop hasn’t missed. He buried 33-yarder later in the game to move the Chiefs to within a touchdown.

The best game of the season was a 5-for-5 performance against the Minnesota Vikings on Oct. 2. The Chiefs won 22-17 in that game, the first victory of the season. In a recent game against the Green Bay Packers, Succop hit all four kicks en route to sending the Pack to their first loss on the season.

Succop has also hit from distance. He hit a 54-yarder against Minnesota and a 53 yarder against the New York Jets. Not bad for someone who has been in the NFL for just three years.

Succop’s success is a two-edged sword. It’s great that the Chiefs now have a reliable kicker. Unfortunately, many of Succop’s field goals have come from within 20 yards. That means the offense has sputtered in the red zone and Kansas City isn’t converting many touchdowns.

At least Kansas City can say they have a kicker for life should they decide to keep Succop. At this point, he’s having the best year of his young career. He missed four field goals out of 29 attempts in 2009. He failed on six tries out of 26 last season. His perfection from beyond 50 yards in 2011 is a personal best.

Two more makes without a miss and Succop owns the franchise record for consecutive field goals. He still has a way to go to set the all-time NFL record. Mike Vanderjagt of the Indianapolis Colts holds the record of 42 consecutive field goals from 2002 to 2004.

In a season of inconsistent play on both sides of the ball for the Chiefs, Succop has turned into one of the bright spots for the franchise.

KC Chiefs to Start Tyler Palko Against Chicago…

The Kansas City Star reports Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley has decided Tyler Palko(notes) will be his starter Dec. 4 against the Chicago Bears. Yet he also told the publication that he will do whatever it takes to win the crucial game.

Haley also said that newly acquired Kyle Orton(notes) took about half of the snaps in practice this week in preparation for the next game. Despite his assertions, it appears Haley is having trouble deciding on which quarterback will be in the game against the Bears.

He may have a case of the Oakland Raiders on his hands. When Oakland lost Jason Campbell(notes) for the season due to a broken collarbone, the quarterback tandem of Carson Palmer(notes) and Kyle Boller(notes) managed six interceptions between them at home against the Chiefs. Palmer has since settled into the Raiders lineup after coming out of a self-imposed exile with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Palko will start for the third straight game. But Haley’s message is clear. Don’t be surprised if fans see Orton under center sometime against the Bears. It will be a matter of necessity and pragmatism for the Chiefs. If Orton can save the Chiefs’ season, so be it.

A loss means they may be out of an AFC West division title. With five games to go, Kansas City is behind Oakland by three games. Another loss, coupled with a win by the Raiders, will put them in a precarious position of being four games behind with four remaining on the schedule. Plus Kansas City also has the San Diego Chargers ahead of them in the standings. Overcoming a deficit to not one but two teams at this stage is going to take a turnaround of epic proportions.

The Haley plan for the the preseason failed in the first game. Then there was optimism when Kansas City won four games in a row. Then they returned to their losing ways with four straight defeats. A division title is not out of reach, but clearly more setbacks will make it more difficult.

How the Chiefs respond against the Bears, after coming so close to defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers a week earlier, will basically make or break the season. If Kansas City makes a game of it, at least fans can say the Chiefs improved on the year and did the best they could with so many injuries. If the Bears blowout KC, look for an interesting offseason full of changes.

Five Reasons KC Chiefs Fans Should Be Thankful…

The Kansas City Chiefs have had an up-and-down season so far. After starting 0-3, the Chiefs won four games before having a three-game losing streak again. Despite the fact that Kansas City is 4-6 on the year, there are at least five reasons why fans should be thankful so far.

Could be Worse

The Chiefs could always be worse. Even though Kansas City has scored a touchdown or less in four losses, at least the four victories are better than the 2008 season when Herm Edwards and company had just two wins.

Backups

Several backups and rookies have stepped up this year. The most obvious is Tyler Palko(notes) who is filling in for the injured Matt Cassel(notes). The Chiefs super sub had 236 yards passing in his first professional start against the New England Patriots Nov. 21. Jackie Battle(notes) has come in nicely for injured running back Jamaal Charles(notes). Leonard Pope(notes) has gotten in some good minutes at tight end as he tries to fill the void left by Tony Moeaki’s(notes) injury.

No Brodie Croyle(notes)

Thank goodness the Chiefs don’t have Brodie Croyle on the depth chart. He played in one game for the Chiefs last season when Cassel had an appendectomy and looked horrible against the San Diego Chargers in a 31-0 loss.

Not the Colts

The Chiefs are not the Indianapolis Colts without their star quarterback. The Colts are 0-10 on the year and haven’t had the services of Peyton Manning(notes) all year long. The Chiefs, at 4-6, are still better than eight NFL teams at this juncture.

Next Year Rules

Even if the Chiefs fizzle out in 2011, next year looks to be one heckuva year. Those players filling in now are getting valuable experience at the NFL level. When everyone heals from their injuries by next season, 2012 looks to be a great one when all of the principle players are back.

Even better is that next year the players will have the benefit of a full training camp with which to prepare for the season. I’m not ready to write off the Chiefs yet, but at least we can be thankful Kansas City will have a great year next year when the main players return and the schedule is potentially easier.

Quarterback Controversy for Kansas City Chiefs:…

The Kansas City Chiefs are the new Denver Broncos. The Broncos couldn’t decide whether or not to start Kyle Orton(notes) or Tim Tebow(notes) earlier in the 2011 NFL season. Now head coach Todd Haley has a decision to make after the Kansas City Chiefs couldn’t move the ball effectively against the Broncos Nov. 13.

Quarterback Matt Cassel.
Wikimedia Commons

Matt Cassel(notes) was victimized for four sacks against the Broncos and threw 13 passes for just 93 yards in four quarters of play. On the final drive, backup Tyler Palko(notes) came into the game and was 5-for-6 with 47 yards. His only incomplete pass was to spike the ball to stop the clock.

Palko had pass completions of 14 yards and seven yards on either side of an eight yard run. Cassel’s longest pass was 15 yards. He also had a run for nine yards on the first drive of the game.

Palko’s final passer rating was 99.3. Cassel finished with 66.5 even though he had a touchdown pass.

The backup’s performance came with a no-huddle offense in the final two minutes of the game that led to a field goal. Before today’s game, Palko had completed four passes over the past two seasons for just 35 yards in his entire career. Now in just the span of seven plays, he had positive yards on all of them save the spike to stop the clock.

Time for another AFC West quarterback controversy. Palko was the third string quarterback last year behind Brodie Croyle(notes). When Cassel had to have an appendectomy in early December, Croyle stepped in against the San Diego Chargers Dec. 12. He was 7-for-17 and 40 yards. Palko came in late to that game and completed two of three passes for eight yards. Palko once again had a better rating than the starting quarterback for one game.

Perhaps the early-season rib injury suffered during a preseason game against the Green Bay Packers has hurt Cassel’s performance more than what the Chiefs let on. Cassel has been sacked more this year than he has in his entire career. Maybe the pressure is getting to him.

Choosing a starter for next week’s game at the New England Patriots is going to be interesting for Haley and his staff. The most brutal part of the Chiefs’ schedule is coming up and they need to do something to stay in playoff contention. Kansas City sits in a three-way tie for second place in the AFC West, one game behind the Oakland Raiders.

KC Chiefs Old Nemesis Wins in San Diego: Fan Take

The dreaded Oakland Raiders now have a half-game lead on the Kansas City Chiefs thanks to a 24-17 win on the road against the San Diego Chargers Nov. 10. Quarterback Carson Palmer(notes) is learning his new team as he threw for two scores. Running back Michael Bush(notes) had 157 yards rushing on the night.

The win puts the Raiders at a 5-4 record, best in the AFC West by a half game. That will change on Sunday. Either the Chiefs will be tied with the Raiders or they will be one game behind. Should the Chiefs win Nov. 13 against the Denver Broncos, the AFC West may settle into a two-team race.

If the Broncos pull out a win in Arrowhead Stadium, all heck will break lose in the division. The Raiders will be 5-4 while the other four teams will be 4-5 in that scenario. Chiefs fans everywhere are hoping that the Raiders and Chiefs will maintain their duels for the division crown, culminating in the penultimate game of the season Dec. 24 in Arrowhead Stadium.

Depending upon how the Raiders and Chiefs do over the next five games, a late December matchup may decide the division title. Both clubs face better competition as the rivals play the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers.

A healthy and happy Palmer may spell doom for the Chiefs. He’s gone from relaxing on the beach in southern California to roasting AFC West defenses in a few short weeks. The Chiefs got to him Oct. 23 when Kansas City intercepted Palmer three times. That kind of deluge likely won’t happen again now that Palmer has found his rhythm.

In order to keep pace with the Raiders, Kansas City will need to have some upsets along the way. A game at Chicago is a must-win Dec. 4 followed by a huge matchup with the New York Jets a week later. If the Chiefs keep winning, the AFC West will be one of the tightest divisions in the NFL in 2011. So far, it is the only division to have all four teams within two games of each other.

Tamarick Vanover is No Longer One of a Kind: KC…

Tamarick Vanover was, at one time, the best thing going for the Kansas City Chiefs in the late 1990s. He scored eight touchdowns in five years, four on punt returns and four on kickoffs. He was the backbone of the vaunted special teams unit that led the Chiefs to a couple of AFC West titles.

Then Vanover was arrested, charged and convicted for financing a car theft ring in 2000. CBS Sports reported in 2007 he became the high school football coach at Lake City Christian Academy in Florida.

Until 2011, Vanover held a one-of-a-kind record in the annals of NFL football. At home in Arrowhead Stadium against the San Diego Chargers, Vanover took a punt and returned it 86 yards to win in overtime 29-23. His return was the one and only time a punt return ended an NFL game in overtime Oct. 9, 1995. There have been sudden-death games ended by runs, passes, interceptions and even safeties on more than one occasion.

A punt return for a touchdown was the anomaly and Vanover was the only person to do it. Until Nov. 6, 2011.

Patrick Peterson(notes) returned a punt 99 yards in overtime for the Arizona Cardinals as they defeated the St. Louis Rams 19-13. Peterson is a rookie, like Vanover was in 1995. The only difference is that the Cardinals are now 2-6 on the year and likely out of the NFL playoffs. The Chiefs were a contending team in 1995. Hopefully Peterson will fare better in his NFL career.

But still, on a day when the Chiefs looked like a regular NFL team that is struggling to find its identity, it was fitting that another of their flops in Vanover looked less than ordinary in the history of the NFL.

Vanover started out with great potential in the Chiefs organization. The 2011 season for Kansas City had great potential going into a game against the previously-winless Miami Dolphins and a 4-3 record. On the same day, both Vanover and his former team were relegated to just average teams on an average day.

It had to happen sometime. As with any NFL team, next Sunday is a new day. The Chiefs can get better with a win against the Denver Broncos Nov. 13.

KC Chiefs Pummeled by Dolphins, Still in First…

If there was any good news for the Kansas City Chiefs Nov. 6, it was that they are still tied for first place in the AFC West. The Miami Dolphins scored 31 unanswered points en route to their first win of the 2011 season by a 31-3 score in Arrowhead Stadium.

The four-game winning streak came to a screeching halt. For the third time all season, Kansas City scored seven points or less. The offense looked like they did in the first two games when the Chiefs lost by a combined 89-10.

The statistics other than the scoreboard were decent. Kansas City had the ball for nine minutes more than Miami. Quarterback Matt Cassel(notes) threw for more yards than Matt Moore(notes) for Miami. The Chiefs even had more net yards rushing.

The key to the game was giving up big plays. Two touchdowns for Miami were from outside the red zone. On Miami’s first scoring drive, they went 47 yards in six plays. Two of those plays went for 18 and 20 yards. Their next scoring drive was three plays, all of which were over 20 yards. The Dolphins were only ahead 14-3 at halftime.

Then the ugliness kept happening. On Miami’s second drive of the third quarter, they had four plays to a touchdown that started after a fumbled fake field goal. The Dolphin were helped by a 15-yard penalty on the Chiefs en route to yet another touchdown that started with decent field position.

Cassel was sacked five times and actually had 38 yards rushing which was just two yards worse than Jackie Battle(notes) on the day. Battle led the Chiefs with 40 yards rushing.

As I said, the good news was that Kansas City is still in first place in the AFC West. The San Diego Chargers ran into the great green machine in the Green Bay Packers. Aaron Rodgers(notes) threw four touchdown passes as the Packers outlasted the Chargers 45-38. Philip Rivers(notes) threw two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns.

Meanwhile, the Denver Broncos won thanks in part to the legs of quarterback Tim Tebow(notes) who had 117 yards on the ground in a 38-24 victory over the Oakland Raiders. Denver is now one game behind the other three teams in the AFC West.

KC Chiefs Can’t Overlook Winless Miami Dolphins:…

Kansas City Chiefs fans have only to look back one season to know that the Chiefs cannot overlook a winless team in the NFL season. The Chiefs (4-3) host the 0-7 Miami Dolphins Nov. 6 in Arrowhead Stadium Nov. 6.

Quarterback Matt Cassel.
Wikimedia Commons

Last year in Week 8, the 4-2 Chiefs were playing the winless Buffalo Bills in Arrowhead. Kansas City won 13-10 in overtime as Ryan Succop(notes) kicked a field goal as time expired in the sudden death period.

That Kansas City team is in the past. Now, a team that has built confidence over the 2011 season will look to continue to move forward. After starting 0-3, the Chiefs have a four-game winning streak.

One more win can take them into first place alone in the AFC West if the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers both happen to lose. The Raiders host the Denver Broncos. Meanwhile, the Chargers are likely to lose as they host the undefeated Green Bay Packers.

Several things need to keep happening for the Chiefs to win. Kansas City basically needs to have a game like it did against Oakland. The Chiefs pummeled the injury-depleted Raiders 28-0 Oct. 23. Then they had an emotional win Halloween against the Chargers when Kansas City pulled out a miracle win in overtime. Philip Rivers(notes) fumbled a snap late in the game to turn the ball over to the Chiefs which paved the way to victory.

Kansas City has two great wins in a row over division foes. Now is not the time to relax and take it easy. The 16-game NFL season is tough, but key personnel are stepping up. Jackie Battle(notes) has gotten better every week at running back. The secondary has improved with key interceptions over the past two games. Perhaps most importantly, rookie wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin(notes) has finally gotten some playing time after coming back from a hand injury.

On the defensive side of the stats, Miami and Kansas City are pretty much even in terms of giving up yardage and points. One difference is that Miami only has two interceptions on the year whereas the Chiefs have 13. Miami hasn’t scored a touchdown on defense all season long.

Kansas City needs to keep up the pressure on quarterback Matt Moore(notes). He had an anemic 138 yards passing against the New York Giants Oct. 30. The Chiefs also need to contain Reggie Bush(notes) who keeps getting better every week.

William Browning is a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs after latching on to the team during the lean years of St. Louis football. Born in the gateway city, he is also a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. He currently resides in Branson, Mo.

NFL Picks, Week 9: Kansas City Chiefs Favored…

Read More: Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs

Albert Breer, writer for NFL.com, has the Kansas City Chiefs winning in a very decisive fashion on Sunday afternoon against the Miami Dolphins. While the choice isn’t exactly earth-shattering, Breer does have the Chiefs winning by a wider margin than most at 27-13. That two touchdown margin outdoes most rankings which have the Chiefs by a field goal or so.

Breer writes, “This could be a pothole for K.C., on a short week and coming off a big win. But the Dolphins are so psychologically battered, it’s hard to see them winning at Arrowhead.” It’s the stadium that played such a factor on Monday Night Football against the San Diego Chargers in the close win there and it’s clear the fans know well how much of a role they can play. Expect the positive momentum to continue in Kansas City on Sunday afternoon and cause the Dolphins offense fits trying to adjust to the noise.

NFL Picks: Yahoo! Analysts Favor Kansas City…

Read More: Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs

One thing that all Yahoo! NFL analysts are agreed upon is that the Kansas City Chiefs should win against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday. One look at the team’ records involved should tell that much, but anything is possible on a Sunday afternoon in the NFL and the Chiefs aren’t likely to overlook the Dolphins on Sunday at 12:00pm CT.

Mike Silver, Jason Cole and Les Carpenter all have the Chiefs winning this season and each also has the Oakland Raiders winning over the Denver Broncos. Only Mike Silver has the San Diego Chargers winning this week, but that’s no surprise considering they face the best team in the NFL: the Green Bay Packers.

With a win, the Chiefs can move to 5-3 and a full game over the Chargers if they lose, as expected, to the Packers.

After losing Eric Berry to injury, Kendrick Lewis…

Now, plenty of teams are forced to give Lewis a whole lot of thought.

The second-year safety has assumed a much bigger role with the Chiefs, who lost Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry to a season-ending knee injury in the first game of the season.

Lewis has picked off a pass each of the past two weeks, returning one of them 59 yards for a touchdown against the Oakland Raiders. He also recovered a fumble in Monday night’s 23-20 overtime win over the San Diego Chargers that gave Kansas City a share of the AFC West lead.

“Kendrick last year, as a young guy, I know multiple times I talked about him, how he’s pretty impressive, and became an important part of our team pretty quickly,” coach Todd Haley said.

“A lot of that had to do with his ability to be a leader, and communicate, and help other teammates around him, and it’s never been too big for Kendrick. This guy’s been pretty impressive from a leadership standpoint right out of the gate.”

Displaced by Hurricane Katrina in high school, the native of New Orleans wound up heading to Mississippi for college, where the former wide receiver excelled as a defensive back.

Lewis was elected team captain by his teammates, and coach Houston Nutt has lavished praise on him for helping the Rebels to Cotton Bowls after the 2008 and ‘09 seasons. Lewis not only led the team in tackles those two years, he also led Ole Miss in interceptions.

During the NFL combine, though, he ran a 4.73-second 40-yard dash — and his stock plummeted.

Some analysts predicted he wouldn’t go until the seventh round, if at all. But the Chiefs’ scouts liked what they saw, and Pioli made the call to draft Lewis despite having already selected Berry — the much more highly touted safety — with their first-round pick.

It turned out to be a wise move right from the start.

Jarred Page was expected to be the starting safety alongside Berry last season, but he decided not to sign his tender and was traded to New England. Eventually, Lewis moved into the starting role after an injury to veteran safety Jon McGraw, and he hasn’t given up the job since.

His excellence in pass defense has never been clearer than in the four games Lewis missed last season due to injury; the Chiefs lost three of them.

“First and foremost, defensively, somebody in that secondary has to be the quarterback of what’s going on, and when you have someone you can trust like we trust Kendrick, understanding as the formations change, the tight ends flip, the technical jargon, a lot of adjustments that are going on at a high rate, you know, this guy is a comfort,” Haley said. “Kendrick is a comfort to have out there.”

His value has only grown with the loss of Berry, who started every game as a rookie and wound up representing the Chiefs in the Pro Bowl. It was Berry who emerged as one of the central figures on a rapidly improving defense before a torn ACL in his left knee abruptly ended his season.

“He’s done a good job of stepping in there and being a consistent contributor for us back there,” McGraw said after the Chiefs went through a light workout indoors Wednesday.

McGraw has been around the league long enough to know how important communication is in the defensive backfield. That’s what has made Lewis’ play even more incredible. Not only did the Chiefs lose Berry, but McGraw also went down against San Diego, and Lewis still held things together.

“It’s difficult. You’re used to certain ways of communication, certain expectations, where a guy is going to be, what he’s thinking,” McGraw said. “So there’s always a little difficulty in adjustment and he’s done a great job of that.”

Lewis has three interceptions this season, one of which he nearly brought back for a touchdown against San Diego and another he did against Oakland, tightrope walking down the sideline the final few yards and contorting his body in just the right way to get across the goal line.

He’s also stepped up to stop the run, a job that normally falls to Berry, helping a defense that was so maligned after allowing 89 points through two games get things under control.

Now, Kansas City is riding an improbable four-game winning streak into Sunday’s game against the winless Miami Dolphins. They could win their fifth straight for the first time in eight years.

“Kendrick is a comfort to have out there on the field, I know, to all of us as coaches, because he does a very good job of getting it right,” Haley said. “And that’s happening at a very high rate.”

Chiefs safety Lewis becomes QB of secondary

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)—Nobody gave Kendrick Lewis(notes) much thought when the
Kansas City Chiefs made him their fifth-round draft pick last year.

He wasn’t even the best player out of Ole Miss to be selected by the Chiefs
— they also picked versatile running back Dexter McCluster(notes) in the early rounds.
But Scott Pioli saw something in Lewis on video, so the Chiefs’ general manager
called in to make Lewis the 136th overall pick.

Now, plenty of teams are forced to give Lewis a whole lot of thought.

expectations, where a guy is going to be, what he’s thinking,” McGraw said.
“So there’s always a little difficulty in adjustment and he’s done a great job
of that.”

Lewis has three interceptions this season, one of which he nearly brought
back for a touchdown against San Diego and another he did against Oakland,
tightrope walking down the sideline the final few yards and contorting his body
in just the right way to get across the goal line.

He’s also stepped up to stop the run, a job that normally falls to Berry,
helping a defense that was so maligned after allowing 89 points through two
games get things under control.

Now, Kansas City is riding an improbable four-game winning streak into
Sunday’s game against the winless Miami Dolphins. They could win their fifth
straight for the first time in eight years.

“Kendrick is a comfort to have out there on the field, I know, to all of us
as coaches, because he does a very good job of getting it right,” Haley said.
“And that’s happening at a very high rate.”

Running low on time today, i’ll be back tomorrow hopefully with some more news.

Kansas City Chiefs beat San Diego Chargers in…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Ryan Succop kicked the Kansas City Chiefs into the history books.

Philip Rivers will be quite the footnote.

Succop knocked through a 30-yard field goal in overtime Monday night, giving the Chiefs a 23-20 victory over the San Diego Chargers and moving them into an improbable tie atop the AFC West.

Kansas City became the first team in NFL history to lose its first three games and share at least part of a division lead after four more games. The Chiefs are also the first team since the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2000 to win four consecutive games after losing their first three.

Kansas City, San Diego and Oakland share the AFC West lead with 4-3 records.

Rivers could have changed the scenario.

The three-time Pro Bowl quarterback marched the Chargers downfield in the closing minutes of regulation. With first-and-10 at the Kansas City 15 and 48 seconds on the clock, Rivers fumbled the snap and the Chiefs’ Andy Studebaker clawed under the pile and retrieved the ball.

“I haven’t had one in years,” Rivers said of the fumbled snap. “It’s unfortunate. I dropped it.

“This one is rough. You blow it on a play that never should have happened.”

Rivers was 26 of 41 for 369 yards but was intercepted twice.

Kansas City moved down the field for its own chance to win in regulation, but Matt Cassel overthrew his intended receiver and Eric Weddle’s second interception sent the game to overtime.

Cassel was 19 of 32 for 261 yards and threw two passes that were intercepted.

That’s all the news for today.
