Feb 4, 2012 – According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Kansas City Chiefs will hire former Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Brian Daboll to same position. Daboll has a history with Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel from their time together in New England.

Daboll got his start as a graduate assistant under Nick Saban at Michigan State from 1998-1999. After a couple of years he was hired by the New England Patriots where he began as a defensive assistant for two years and then as a wide receivers coach for five years. It was there that he worked with Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel, who was the defensive coordinator at the time. They won three Super Bowls in New England together before Daboll left for the New York Jets to be their quarterbacks coach.

After two years in New York Daboll left to be the offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns. While running the offense in Cleveland, the Browns finished 32nd in total offense under Daboll in 2009 and then 29th in 2010. Last year for the Miami Dolphins Daboll helped their offense finish 22nd in the NFL.

Daboll joins a Chiefs team that struggled to score points for most of the season after injuries to Tony Moeaki, Jamaal Charles and Matt Cassel derailed the offense during the season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Longtime NFL assistant coach Bill Muir followed through on his plans to retire, informing the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday that he wouldn’t return for a 35th season in the league.

Muir joined the Chiefs in 2009 as offensive line coach under Todd Haley, and was elevated to offensive co-ordinator last season. But the Chiefs struggled with injuries and inconsistency, which resulted in the firing of Haley and the hiring of Romeo Crennel as head coach.

The 69-year-old Muir is considered one of the best offensive line coaches in football, though he wasn’t expected to remain as the Chiefs’ offensive co-ordinator if he stayed on the staff.

“It has been an honour to be a part of this great league for so long,” Muir said in a statement issued by the Chiefs. “Over the years I’ve made a lot of great friends and worked with many talented players and coaches. This was a personal decision for me, the timing was right.”

Muir played tackle for Susquehanna University, a small liberal arts college in central Pennsylvania, and got his start in coaching there in 1965.

He bounced through stops at Delaware Valley, Rhode Island, Idaho State and SMU before getting his break in professional football with Orlando of the short-lived Continental League.

His first job in the NFL was as a scout for Tampa Bay from 1978-81, and he returned to the Buccaneers more than two decades later, helping the franchise win its only Super Bowl.

In between, he spent time working with the offensive lines in Detroit and New England, and as defensive co-ordinator and offensive line coach in Indianapolis. Muir also spent seven seasons with the New York Jets as offensive line coach before returning to the Buccaneers.

“I have a tremendous amount of respect for Bill,” Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli said. “I have worked with him for a long time and have witnessed him develop a number of very good football players. His contributions are very much appreciated and he will be missed.”

Not by every fan in Kansas City, though.

Muir bore the brunt of criticism for the Chiefs’ poor performance on offence last season, even though there were always questions about whether he was truly in charge. Haley’s background on offence and tendency to micromanage led many to believe he was calling the shots.

It didn’t help that Kansas City lost tight end Tony Moeaki and All-Pro running back Jamaal Charles to season-ending knee injuries in a span of three weeks at the start of the season.

Quarterback Matt Cassel joined them on IR with a hand injury sustained in Week 10.

The Chiefs still managed to play themselves into a position to defend their AFC West title despite struggling on offence. But their playoff hopes were dashed when they managed only 13 points in an overtime loss to Oakland in the penultimate game of the season.

Kansas City failed to score at least 20 points in its final nine games.

Crennel has been tight-lipped about Muir’s potential replacement, though quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn and assistant head coach Maurice Carthon are considered internal candidates.

Crennel has indicated that it could be after the Super Bowl before he makes a decision.

“I’m excited for Bill as he moves into retirement,” Crennel said. “I’ve known him for a long time and he is one of the finest coaches I’ve ever been around, and an even better person. Bill is a very good friend and I have a great deal of respect for the way he worked.

“It was a privilege to work alongside him.”

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Bill Muir told the Kansas City Chiefs that he won’t return next season as a coach.

Muir has been a coach or scout for 47 years. He has been in the NFL for 34 seasons.

The veteran coach served as offensive coordinator during the 2011 season. Coach Romeo Crennel told Muir that he planned to hire a new offensive coordinator but wanted him to stay on as offensive line coach.

Muir has held that position since joining the Chiefs in 2009.

“I feel badly because they wanted me to stay,” the 69-year-old Muir told the Kansas City Star, KCTV5′s reporting partner. “I’m not leaving because of anything that has gone on or is going on or will go on with the Chiefs. This is a personal decision. It is very personal. I’ve been denying myself a lot of things over the years, but I’m at a point in my life where I want to do some other things.”

The Star said quarterbacks coach Jim Zorn has interviewed for offensive coordinator job.

In a statement, Crennel said Muir is one of the league’s finest coaches and a great person.

“Bill is a very good friend and I have a great deal of respect for the way he worked,” Crennel said. “It was a privilege to work alongside him.”

Muir wished the team well and said he knows the Chiefs are in great hands.

He won a Super Bowl ring while serving as a coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Most NFL coaches don't stay unemployed for long.

Most NFL coaches don’t stay unemployed for long. The Associated Press reports former Kansas City Chiefs’ head coach Todd Haley, who was fired in mid-December, has interviewed for the offensive coordinator job with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Steelers finished 12th in the NFL in yards and 21st in points scored. The Chiefs were even worse on offense. They were 31st in points scored and 27th in total yards.

The Arizona Republic reported in mid-January that a return to Haley’s old staff with the Arizona Cardinals seemed doubtful. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt is happy with his offensive coordinator and Haley would have to start lower on the totem pole in Phoenix. He was the offensive coordinator in Arizona until he was hired by the Chiefs as a head coach.

The Haley saga continues. He lasted less than three seasons in Kansas City as a head coach. All of the head coaching positions are filled. Now he seems to be going around to different teams seeking a job on the offensive side of the ball.

Teams’ unwillingness to hire Haley may stem from several reasons. First is that new head coaches need a few weeks to settle in. Then the hiring process takes time to whittle down candidates from applicants to interviewees to finalists. Another reason may just be that Haley’s last team on offense was one of the NFL’s worst. Kansas City scored just 13.3 points per game and traveled just 310.8 yards per game.

Yet Haley’s dynamic may change when he’s back at being an offensive coordinator. He only has to worry about one side of the ball and not two as a head coach. There is only one unit Haley needs to rely upon instead of three (including special teams). Some coaches do just fine as lifetime coordinators and never make it to the head coaching ranks.

In short, Haley seems to have been given a valuable life lesson about knowing his limitations. He may eventually work his way into another NFL head coaching job, but only after he spends a few more years soul searching as an offensive coordinator.

There’s nothing wrong with that.

Head coach Romeo Crennel of the Kansas City Chiefs will have a new look on his coaching staff in 2012. The team's official website announced Jan. 30 that Tom McMahon will serve as the special teams coach of the Chiefs next season.

Head coach Romeo Crennel of the Kansas City Chiefs will have a new look on his coaching staff in 2012. The team’s official website announced Jan. 30 that Tom McMahon will serve as the special teams coach of the Chiefs next season. He comes to Kansas City after three years down I-70 with the St. Louis Rams. In 2010, the Rams had the third-best punting average. They also led the league with 12 punt returns of 20 yards are more from 2009 and 2010 combined.

McMahon has also served as assistant special teams coaches with the Atlanta Falcons. Before that, he was coaching with the University of Louisville and Utah State. McMahon replaces Steve Hoffman who was not retained by the team after Todd Haley was fired. Two other coaches, both on the offensive side of the ball, were also let go.

Special teams, although not horrible in 2011, need improvement. The kick return game was stagnant in 2011 as there were no special teams touchdowns scored whatsoever. Two field goals were blocked in a game Dec. 24 against the Oakland Raiders, an overtime loss that haunted the team. Had the Chiefs won that game, they would have made the playoffs.

Placekicker Ryan Succop was a bright spot on special teams. ESPN reports he tied Pete Stoyanovich’s franchise record of 22 makes in a row. As such, the team signed him to a five-year, $14 million contract for his hard work.

There is still no word on a new offensive coordinator.

Whoever gets hired to run the offense will have an interesting job in 2012. Key players will be back from injuries. The defense, run by Crennel in 2011, came up big and bailed out the offense several times. The offense was sorely lacking in scoring. The Chiefs’ red zone offense was horrible. They would move the ball just fine until the team got down inside the five with a first a goal situation. Succop had eight field goals from less than 29 yards, meaning the ball was spotted at the 12-yard-line or closer to the end zone.

The Chiefs will likely draft an offensive lineman high in the draft as they need players to replace aging veterans that can open up holes for running backs and who can protect quarterback Matt Cassel.

William Browning is a fan of the Kansas City Chiefs after latching on to the team during the lean years of St. Louis football. Born in the gateway city, he is also a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. He currently resides in Branson, Mo.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Monday that the team has hired Tom McMahon to serve as the club’s special teams coach.

“I am pleased to add Tom to our staff,” said Head Coach Romeo Crennel. “He is a diligent worker and passionate coach. It is a great addition for us.”

McMahon joins the Chiefs after a three-year stint (2009-11) in St. Louis where he served as special teams coordinator for the Rams. In 2010, the Rams had the league’s third-best net punting average at 40.0 yards per punt. Additionally, McMahon’s primary punt returner, Danny Amendola, led the NFL with 12 returns of 20-plus yards in 2009 and 2010 combined.

“I’m very blessed to have the opportunity to come to Kansas City and be a part of Romeo’s staff,” McMahon said. “Romeo and I have a shared vision of what it takes to win and I’m excited to get started.”

Prior to his time in St. Louis, McMahon spent two seasons (2007-08) as assistant special teams coach for the Atlanta Falcons. He was instrumental in the development of kick returner Jerious Norwood, whose 2,628 kickoff return yards ranked third in the NFL over that two-year span.

Before joining Atlanta, McMahon spent one season (2006) with the University of Louisville, coaching outside linebackers and special teams. Under his guidance, kicker Art Carmody earned the Lou Groza Award, which is given to the nation’s top kicker.

McMahon also served 11 seasons (1995-2005) as an assistant coach at Utah State in a variety of roles, including defensive line coach/recruiting coordinator, linebackers/special teams coach and defensive ends coach as a graduate assistant.

A native of Helena, Mont., McMahon made his coaching debut at his alma mater, Carroll College, as the secondary coach in 1992 after concluding his four-year playing career in his hometown. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and secondary education from Carroll and earned a master’s degree in secondary education at Utah State.

McMahon is married to his wife, Kim. They have three children, Dawson, Emmett and Quincy.

McMahon replaces former special teams coach Steve Hoffman, who was not retained by the club, along with wide receivers coach Richie Anderson and assistant offensive line coach Pat Perles.
